Wedding Ring Shopping in Sri Lanka: What to Know Before You Buy

From choosing between 22K and 18K to getting the sizing right, here is a practical guide for couples shopping for wedding rings.

Choosing a wedding ring set is as much a practical decision as a sentimental one. It is a piece you will wear daily for decades, so comfort, durability, and craftsmanship matter as much as design.

22K or 18K?

Many couples in Sri Lanka lean towards traditional 22K gold for its rich colour and cultural significance, especially for the ceremonial ring exchange. For daily wear afterward, some choose an 18K band for its added durability against scratches and dents. There is no wrong choice — it comes down to whether you prioritise tradition or everyday resilience.

Getting the Size Right

Fingers can change size slightly with temperature and time of day, so get sized later in the day when fingers are at their largest, and avoid sizing when you are unusually cold or dehydrated. If a ring will be resized later, ask your jeweller about the design's limits — heavily engraved or gemstone-set bands can only be adjusted so much without disturbing the pattern or setting.

Questions Worth Asking In-Store

  • What is the exact purity and weight of each ring, and is that stated on the bill?
  • Is resizing included, and within what timeframe after purchase?
  • What is the policy on exchange if the design does not suit once worn?
  • Are the making charges and gold price itemised separately?
